Moulin Rouge – The Musical at Moran Theatre

In 2019, first showing at the Al Hirschfeld theatre, the 2001 movie Moulin Rouge was modified into the iconic musical adaptation in Broadway. Originally produced by Baz Luhrmann, it was performed beautifully by award-winning cast members like Aaron Tveit and Karen Olivo, who originated the roles of Christian and Satine respectively, and production crew including director Alex Timbers and music arrangements and medleys by Justine Levine, behind the curtain.

Moulin Rouge! The Musical is a show exemplifying happiness amidst tragic love that shows us all four Bohemian values of truth, beauty, freedom, and love. At the turn of the 20th century and at the peak of Bohemianism, during the period of La Belle Époque, Christian, an American writer and composer, tries to find his big career break. He hopes to set in motion a successful career as a writer and travels to Montmartre, Paris, where he meets two new acquaintances, Lautrec and Santiago, who advise him to create a play that they can showcase. It is in the underworld of Moulin Rouge where he meets Satine, the performer of the the renowned entertainment venue that captures his attention. Their developing love however faces an almost insurmountable obstacle in the persona of the wealthy and corrupt Duke of Monroth, who is promised Satine by the nightclub’s proprietor Harold Zidler, in exchange for a substantial financial expenditure to keep Moulin Rouge afloat and pay off the nightclub's debts. So begins Christian and Satine’s secret and tragic love affair on the Broadway stage.

Basically a love story that remains relatable and relevant up to today, the musical is also a mixture of both classical and modern music, combining songs not just from the 2001 film, but also musical mash-ups and medleys from modern songs that were interlaced into the plot of Moulin Rouge.
