The roots of Hadestown trace back to 2006-2007, originating as a grassroots community theater initiative in Vermont. The driving forces behind the project were the primary arranger/orchestrator Michael Chorney, original director/designer Ben t. Matchstick, and a talented cast and crew of local Vermont artists. Early on, support came from various quarters, including grants from the Vermont Community Foundation, the Vermont Arts Council, producing partner Higher Ground Music, and numerous individual supporters.

In 2010, Hadestown took a significant step with the release of a studio record on Righteous Babe Records. Anais Mitchell collaborated with producer and co-arranger/orchestrator Todd Sickafoose. For this project, they brought in notable guest vocalists like Justin Vernon (Bon Iver), Ani Difranco, Greg Brown, Ben Knox Miller (the Low Anthem), and the Haden Triplets. Over the following years, Anais, Michael Chorney, and the Hadestown Orchestra performed concert versions of the show in various cities across the USA, UK, and Canada.

Transitioning from a concert format to a full-fledged theatrical production began in 2013. Anais partnered with director Rachel Chavkin, dramaturg Ken Cerniglia, and producers Mara Isaacs and Dale Franzen, workshopping and refining the piece. Michael Chorney and Todd Sickafoose remained pivotal as Arrangers/Orchestrators, while additional talents like Liam Robinson (Music Direction and Vocal Arrangements), Rachel Hauck (Set Design), Michael Krass (Costumes), Bradley King (Lighting Design), and Nevin Steinberg and Jessica Paz (Sound) joined the creative ensemble. In 2017, producers Hunter Arnold and Tom Kirdahy became integral parts of the team.

“The season’s standout musical.” – Elle

This Broadway production is not new to praise. Since its debut in 2019, the show has received overly positive reviews from critics. The show even received numerous awards and nominations. At the Tony Awards, Hadestown received 14 nominations (a record for the most for the evening). They went on to win eight of their nominations, including Best Musical and Best Original Score.

Even the critics can’t stop raving about this production. TimeOut NY specifically invited theatre fans to attend a production of Hadestown in their review. They said, “Here’s my advice: Attend hell. And by hell, of course, I’m referring to Hadestown, Anaïs Mitchell’s captivating and emotional new Broadway performance. In essence, the show gives a new twist to the classic Greek tale of Orpheus and Eurydice: Boy crosses paths with a girl, they fall in love, they face hardships, they go through trials, yet they find themselves in the underworld—sounds akin to a old tale, right? But it’s Mitchell’s current take on this timeless tale—and Rachel Chavkin’s—that infuse life back to this traditional narrative.”
